This report summarizes, by birth place, naturalization applications relating to Armenians in the USA. These include two different forms: the Declaration of Intention (also known as "first papers") and the Petition for Naturalization. The Declaration of Intention was filed first. Within seven years, the immigrant could apply for citizenship by filing a Petition for Naturalization. These two documents are extremely valuable sources of information about Armenian immigrants, containing facts not normally found elsewhere. Many of them reveal the immigrant's village of birth; some give the date and place of their marriage in the "old country" and the name of a spouse who didn't survive the genocide. Most of those applying for citizenship were men; although some women applied in the later years.

This database table currently represents just a few of the communities in North America where Armenian immigrants can be found. The records abstracted are those where the images of the naturalization documents are available online. As more of these images become available, and as time permits, I will continue to expand the scope of this coverage. Volunteers are graciously providing assistance in transcribing records from other Armenian settlement communities.

Lists of naturalizations for Canada can be found at http://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/discover/immigration/citizenship-naturalization-records/naturalized-records-1915-1951/Pages/introduction.aspx. The actual certificates may be requested individually, but are yet not publicly available online.

In the case of Armenians born in Turkey, the stated birth place may have been the village or town, kaza, sanjak, or vilayet. Determining which administrative division was intended is often difficult when the names are the same (i.e., does "Sivas" refer to the town, kaza, sanjak, or vilayet?). When it was unclear, I chose the highest level administrative division with that name. Where the name of the village is given, the name of the kaza is shown, followed by the village name in parentheses (e.g., Keghi (Sergevil), which is in the vilayet of Erzurum). In this database, the administrative division of sanjak (a subset of a vilayet) is not used. The political entities are as of the beginning of World War 1; Turkey refers to the Ottoman Empire, Russia to the Russian Empire. (For birth places in the Ottoman Empire, the value in the Town column often refers to the kaza.)

Several options are presented below for customizing this report. By default, the report is created at the detail (Birth Town) level, sorted by Birth Country, Vilayet/State/Province, and Town. The scope of the report can be summarized at the Vilayet/State/Province detail level by unchecking the box labeled "Detail by Town?". The sort order can be changed to sort in descending order by count. (If sort is selected, a suppression filter can also be activated to not show the counts less than the desired percentage, in increments of 1%, 2%, 3%, etc.) Some naturalization applications named an individual's birth place as a village within the kaza (e.g., Sergevil within Keghi). By default, these are shown as separate rows but may be combined into the kaza to normalize the counts, by selecting that check box.
