This report summarizes, by birth place, military registration entries relating to Armenian men in North America. These include the World War 1 and World War 2 draft registrations for men living in the USA, and Attestation Papers for men joining the Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF) during World War 1. (Note that Canada performed some registrations for the Canadian Expeditionary Force at locations outside of Canada, including the USA and England. Also, some Armenian men living in the USA went to Canada to join the Canadian Expeditionary Force.) The place of birth of each registrant appeared on all records except for Card Type C for men registering in the USA for the World War 1 draft (12 September 1918). (For Card Type C, there is a field for the nearest relative's name and address. If the registrant's wife's last known address is in Turkey or Russia, this may be a clue to the location of his birth.)

This database table currently represents just a few of the communities in North America where Armenian immigrants can be found. As time permits, I will continue to expand the scope of this coverage. Volunteers are graciously providing assistance in transcribing records from other Armenian settlement communities. In the USA WW1 draft registrations, Card C (for the registration performed 12-Sep-1918) contained a field for a Nearest Relative's name and address. In the WW2 draft registrations, this field was replaced by one entitled Name and Address of Person Who Will Always Know Your Address. In these abstracts, Nearest Relative is the label used for both types of fields, even though it may actually be a non-Armenian friend, neighbor, or employer.

In the case of Armenians born in Turkey, the stated birth place may have been the village or town, kaza, sanjak, or vilayet. Determining which administrative division was intended is often difficult when the names are the same (i.e., does "Sivas" refer to the town, kaza, sanjak, or vilayet?). When it was unclear, I chose the highest level administrative division with that name. In some of the early records, the passenger's stated birth place was incorrect, and actually referred to their original port of departure (e.g., Trebizond, Samsun, or Batum) instead of their birth place. Where the name of the village is given, the name of the kaza is shown, followed by the village name in parentheses (e.g., Keghi (Sergevil), which is in the vilayet of Erzurum). In this database, the administrative division of sanjak (a subset of a vilayet) is not used. The political entities are as of the beginning of World War 1; Turkey refers to the Ottoman Empire, Russia to the Russian Empire. (For birth places in the Ottoman Empire, the value in the Town column often refers to the kaza.)

Several options are presented below for customizing this report. By default, the report is created at the detail (Birth Town) level, sorted by Birth Country, Vilayet/State/Province, and Town. The scope of the report can be summarized at the Vilayet/State/Province detail level by unchecking the box labeled "Detail by Town?". The sort order can be changed to sort in descending order by count. (If sort is selected, a suppression filter can also be activated to not show the counts less than the desired percentage, in increments of 1%, 2%, 3%, etc.) Some military registration entries named an individual's birth place as a village within the kaza (e.g., Sergevil within Keghi). By default, these are shown as separate rows but may be combined into the kaza to normalize the counts, by selecting that check box.
