This report summarizes, by origin location, advertisements placed in Armenian newspapers (published in North America) by Armenians wishing to locate friends and family who may have survived the genocide. These ads, many of them placed in the years immediately following the WW1 Armistice of 11 November 1918, typically included the the place of origin (often the town or village of birth) of the person placing the ad and the people being sought. These ads are especially valuable in that they sometimes give the names of native villages not mentioned in other primary sources.

This database table currently represents just a few of the issues in Armenian publications where ads for genocide survivors can be found. The records abstracted are those where the images of the ads have been scanned. As more of these images become available, and as time permits, I will continue to expand the scope of this coverage.

In the case of Armenians born in Turkey, the stated place of origin may have been the village or town, kaza, sanjak, or vilayet. Determining which administrative division was intended is often difficult when the names are the same (i.e., does "Sivas" refer to the town, kaza, sanjak, or vilayet?). When it was unclear, I chose the highest level administrative division with that name. Where the name of the village is given, the name of the kaza is shown, followed by the village name in parentheses (e.g., Keghi (Sergevil), which is in the vilayet of Erzurum). In this database, the administrative division of sanjak (a subset of a vilayet) is not used. The political entities are as of the beginning of World War 1; Turkey refers to the Ottoman Empire, Russia to the Russian Empire. (For birth places in the Ottoman Empire, the value in the Town column often refers to the kaza.)

Several options are presented below for customizing this report. By default, the report is created at the detail (Origin Town) level, sorted by Origin Country, Vilayet/State/Province, and Town, and includes in its counts the persons placing the ads, as well as people mentioned in the ads. The scope of the report can be summarized at the Vilayet/State/Province detail level by unchecking the box labeled "Detail by Town?". The sort order can be changed to sort in descending order by count. (If sort is selected, a suppression filter can also be activated to not show the counts less than the desired percentage, in increments of 1%, 2%, 3%, etc.) Some ads named the place of origin as a village within the kaza (e.g., Sergevil within Keghi). By default, these are shown as separate rows but may be combined into the kaza to normalize the counts, by selecting that check box. To restrict this report to look only at the persons placing the ads, and not include the people mentioned in the ads, deselect the "Include People Mentioned?" check box.
