Search Deaths - By Last Name (Std.), All Roles

This page allows you to search by standardized last name to find deaths relating to Armenians in North America. Death certificates are particularly important in that they often give the names of the parents of the person who is deceased (the "decedent"), including the mother's maiden surname. Sometimes they give the name of the town/village of birth.

For Mexico, the administrative division of municipality (municipio) is equivalent to county in USA and Canada.

This database table currently represents just a few of the communities in North America where Armenian immigrants can be found. The records abstracted are those where the images of the death registers or the certificates themselves are available online. As more of these images become available, and as time permits, I will continue to expand the scope of this coverage. Volunteers are graciously providing assistance in transcribing records from other Armenian settlement communities.

The death certificates could include the names of up to four different roles - the decedent, his/her spouse, and the parents of the decedent. This page allows you to search on individuals in any of these roles, by standardized surname, to find entries relating to Armenian immigrants who came to North America through 1930. It also may include deaths of young children born to these immigrants (as I will record deaths through 1940).

Names on the death certificates were often variable in spelling. Most are phonetic equivalents to the original Armenian names, but some are quite difficult to reconcile to a known Armenian last name. The drop-down list to the right of the label "Last Name (Std.)" includes all standardized last names in the database for decedents abstracted so far. If you can't find the name you are looking for in that list, click the "Find a Std. Name" button to take you to the Std. Name Lookup page. It will let you map your last name of interest (as recorded in the death certificates) to a standardized last name in the database, returning you to this page and executing the search query with that name. In the result table below, click the "view" icon to the left of the table entry to see the information abstracted from that record.

The "Role" field in the table below is defined as follows: D = Decedent, S = Spouse, F = Father, and M = Mother. The column labeled "Name" could be any one of the three roles. For the roles "S", "F", and "M", the name of the decedent is also shown in the "Decedent Name" column.
